Betfair make Villa the 4/1 favourites to sign the left-back, as reported by The Sun.
Dean Smith has hinted that Villa will be on the look out for defenders in January, as he felt the squad left to him by Steve Bruce was top heavy.
Smith has generally utilised Neil Taylor at left-back to date since taking over, but he has not always impressed.
If Cole was to be brought back to Villa he could offer them great experience, as they aim to get promoted over the second half of the campaign.
Cole, of course, knows Villa assistant manager John Terry well, from their time playing together at Chelsea, and that could give the claret and blues an advantage in the race for his signature.
