Bolton Wanderers loan star Adam Armstrong is scheduled to return to Newcastle United in January.
Bolton Wanderers striker Gary Madine has told the Bolton News that he is confident that Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong will stay at the Macron Stadium beyond January.
According to the Bolton News, transfer restrictions imposed on the Trotters in the summer means that Armstrong’s current loan at the Championship strugglers will expire in the New Year.
Armstrong finally scored his first Championship goal for Bolton in the 2-1 win over Norwich City prior to the international break, and Madine hopes that is just the start for him at Wanderers.
“I am hoping so,” Madine told the Bolton News when asked if Armstrong would stay. “I know the gaffer (Phil Parkinson) will probably want him to and I know Adam will want to stay as well. Because we have a good bond as a team. I hope he stays. I am sure he will.”
“Adam is a brilliant player. He is a great finisher and maybe not everyone has seen that yet. But we do see it every day in training. He hadn’t scored for a few games but he’s got off the mark now in the league so I think he’ll push on from there.”
Armstrong has played 17 times for Bolton this season, although mostly as a makeshift left winger and until his strike against Norwich, he had only scored twice in the Carabao Cup.
The 20-year-old was much more prolific in his loan spell at Coventry City in League One last season, scoring 20 goals in 40 appearances playing in his accustomed centre forward role.
Should Bolton choose not to extend his loan, Armstrong may get some first-team opportunities off the bench back at St James’ Park due to Newcastle’s shortage of striking options.
