Sheffield Wednesday were dumped out of the League Cup by Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

A strong-looking Sheffield Wednesday side was knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

Goals from Dorian Dervite, Adam Armstrong and Jem Karacan looked to have put the Trotters out of sight on their own turf, but Jordan Rhodes’ double set up a tense finale, after Wednesday had squandered several chances.

Few Owls players who started the match emerged from it with any credit, with Joe Wildsmith, Ross Wallace and Fernando Forestieri all receiving their fair share of criticism.

However, it is the performance of Almen Abdi, who cost Carlos Carvalhal’s side more than £3 million a year ago (Transfermarkt), which appears to have caused the most alarm.

Interestingly, last night was only the third time Abdi has completed 90 minutes since moving to Hillsborough, with the previous two coming more than a year – and 17 appearances – ago.
