How Bolton Wanderers’ Twitter-based supporters reacted to the Irish centre-back’s showing in the 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers.
A late Jordan Rhodes strike saw Bolton Wanderers fall 1-0 at Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night, despite Crystal Palace loanee Paddy McCarthy putting in an impressive performance.
McCarthy, 31, was making his first appearance for the club since arriving from Palace for the rest of the season earlier this week and, while he could do little about Rhodes’ 90th-minute winner from Tom Cairney’s corner, the centre-back’s display was still an obvious bright spot.
| Total Tackles | Total Clearances | Duels Won | Duel Success | Won Headers | Header Success | Interceptions | Fouls | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paddy McCarthy | 2 | 16 | 8 | 57% | 6 | 60% | 3 | 2 | 90 |
The Irishman made a match-leading 16 clearances over the course of the 90 minutes – 12 more than his nearest rival Matt Mills – and even earned the praise of manager Neil Lennon at the final whistle, along with fellow new loan signing Giles Coke.
“Our two new loan players did well. I thought Paddy in particular was outstanding and he’’ll only get better with more games,” Lennon said via the club’s official Youtube channel. “I thought he was excellent and he was one of the pluses.”
Palace’s club captain in 2012 until suffering a season-ending injury, McCarthy made two cup appearances under the since-departed Neil Warnock earlier this season before spending two months on loan at League One side Sheffield United.
With his deal at Selhurst Park not set to expire until 2016, it remains to be seen what the summer will hold for the veteran defender but, judging from the Twitter reaction to his debut, Bolton fans might like to see him make a permanent switch to the Macron Stadium if he can put in a few more similar performances moving forward.
