Could Everton play in the Champions League in the coming years?
Everton manager Ronald Koeman told The Premier League Show on BBC Two on Wednesday night (broadcast from 10pm, November 16, 2016) that he plans to guide the team to the Champions League.
Koeman was appointed the Everton manager in the summer following his departure from Premier League rivals Southampton.
The Toffees are doing quite well at the moment and are in the running for a top-six finish in the Premier League.
Everton are currently seventh in the league table with 18 points from 11 matches, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
Koeman has revealed his immediate and long-term target at Everton.
“This season Everton will fight for European football,” Koeman told The Premier League Show on BBC Two on Wednesday night (broadcast from 10pm, November 16, 2016). “But to finish above the big teams in the Premier League will be difficult.
“For next season we need to improve and we will get new signings in which will make the team stronger. The third year, we need to be close to playing in the Champions League.”
Koeman’s plans for Everton are quite ambitious, but it will be hard for the Dutchman to achieve his target.
It will be very tough to compete with Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool for a place in the top four of the Premier League.
Perhaps signing a few very good players next summer or in the summer of 2018 will help, but it is hard to see the Toffees playing in the Champions League anytime soon, unless, of course, they feature in the Europa League and win the competition.
