Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers midfielder Joey Barton is still suspended.
Bobby Russell has The Glasgow Evening Times that Joey Barton’s recent controversy is a “strange situation” at Rangers.
The 34-year-old midfielder was slapped with a three-week suspension by Raangers following a training-ground row with Andy Halliday.
The incident happened a number of days after the Gers’ 5-1 defeat by Old Firm rivals Celtic at Parkhead.
Before being officially suspended, Barton offered his side of the story live on talkSPORT and claimed that he would not shy away from giving his opinion.
Blown out of proportion or not, the ex-Newcastle United man, who later apologised “unreservedly” via The Telegraph, was still suspended.
And Russell, who spent 10 years at Rangers, seems confused as to why the former Premier League man both apologised and defended himself over the incident.
“If you feel you have done something wrong then you are humble about it and you apologise and then you move on,” he told The GET.
“On one hand he is saying he is apologetic and on the other he is saying he is right. It is a strange situation.
“If he was to say he was wrong and would let his football do the talking then that would be fine.”
Rangers have won just one of the three Premiership games which Barton has sat out – Saturday’s 2-0 win over Partick Thistle, which followed a defeat at Aberdeen and a draw at Ross County.
He will return after the international break.
