The Black Cats are preparing for another season in League One and FA Cup hero Kerr gave his thoughts on things at the Stadium of Light at present.
Sunderland legend Bobby Kerr has given his honest opinion on the current state of affairs at the Stadium of Light, from the owner and manager to how the team performed in the League One playoff final, in conversation with the Sunderland Echo.
This time last year the Black Cats were preparing for life in the third tier amid financial issues but the ship was steadied as Stewart Donald took ownership of the club and Jack Ross was appointed manager.
Sunderland were in promotion contention for much of the season but stuttered to a fifth-placed finish in the third tier and although they were able to overcome Portsmouth in the playoff semi-finals, they just fell short as Charlton Athletic triumphed at Wembley.
Failure to achieve a quick Championship return in falling at the final hurdle after the regular league campaign petered out rankled with much of the fanbase but the 1973 FA Cup winning captain remained positive and called on the team to “do it right this season”.
“I think they’ve done a magnificent job,” he told the Sunderland Echo on the subject of Donald and Ross. “They had to stand up and be counted, and now I think the fans and everyone have come on side. Now hopefully next season, they can go one better and win something.”
On the subject of the team, Kerr added: “I thought they did well. There was a magnificent performance from the fans at Wembley. I happened to be to down there at the time and it was brilliant, I couldn’t believe it. We should have won. They didn’t. Hopefully they have another go at it and do it right this season.”
Sunderland’s League One fixture list will be released on Thursday, June 20 at 9am, with fellow heavyweights Portsmouth also still in the third tier and the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town joining them.
