Former Rangers man Bob Malcolm has told The Scottish Herald that he is looking forward to seeing Andy Halliday return to Ibrox.

The Scottish midfielder endured a very mixed loan spell at Gabala in Azerbaijan during the first half of the campaign but he will return to Glasgow this month.

Halliday, signed by Mark Warburton in 2015, was shipped off on loan by former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha and it will be interesting to see whether the Portuguese’s short-term successor Graeme Murty envisages a more prominent role in the Gers’ first team for him.

Malcolm knows all about the 26-year-old’s talents, having worked as Barry Ferguson’s assistant when they managed him at Blackpool, and although the 37-year-old is excited about seeing him back at Rangers, he says Murty would waste him as a holding midfielder.

He told The Scottish Herald: “Andy coming back to Rangers can only be a good thing. He had a couple of good seasons at Rangers before going out on loan and has a lot to offer them. Even if he doesn’t play regularly it will be good just having him in the dressing room.

Ben Mee of Burnley takes on Andy Halliday of Rangers during a pre-season friendly between Rangers FC and Burnley FC at Ibrox Stadium on July 30, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“But he played as a sitting midfielder under Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha and I don’t think he’s a sitting midfielder. We had him at Blackpool and he played wide of three forward midfielders and he also played left back well.

“He was good getting forward and getting crosses into the box. He has been asked to play out of position as a holding midfielder since he came back to Glasgow and he has done that well. But he has probably suffered as a result of that. Hopefully he will get a chance in a different position under the new manager.”
