Bob Malcolm claims Rangers are about to sign a great player in Jamie Murphy – five years since first attempt

Rangers are set to hand Jamie Murphy his dream move to Ibrox.

Former Rangers defender Bob Malcolm has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Jamie Murphy is a ‘great player’ ahead of his move to Ibrox.

Rangers tied up their first signing of the January transfer window on Wednesday, securing the signature of midfielder Sean Goss on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season.

Now, manager Graeme Murty and Director of Football Mark Allen are working to bring in more signings, and a second arrival could be on the verge of completion.

According to the Daily Record, Brighton and Hove Albion winger Jamie Murphy has arrived in Glasgow today in order to complete a medical and finalise his move to Ibrox, which will cost around £1million rising to £1.4million.

Murphy, 28, has started just one Premier League game this season having previously been an important player under Chris Hughton, notching eight goals and seven assists in the previous two seasons.

The Scottish wide man grew up supporting Rangers, meaning his move to Ibrox is something of a dream switch, and fans should be excited about his arrival.

Ahead of the move, former Rangers ace Bob Malcolm has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Murphy is a ‘great player’, and Rangers are about sign a player they have nobody like.

Malcolm added that he thinks Murphy is exactly what Rangers are missing, and noted that he thought Murphy would join Rangers when they tried to sign him in January 2013, but five years on, he is finally set for Ibrox.

“Jamie is a great player and a good lad as well,” said Malcolm. “He can play both as a winger and up front as well. They need to get players like that back at the club, guys who know what it’s all about. He is still a good age too. It would be a great bit of business. Rangers don’t have anybody like Jamie at the moment. They have obviously got Alfredo who has got great strengths and has scored a fair few goals. But they don’t really have anybody who can take the ball and attack, who can go at players.”

“Jamie can take the ball, beat one or two players and have a shot at goal. He can create his own chances. I think he is exactly what Rangers have been missing. I thought Jamie would have gone to Ibrox the last time that Rangers tried to sign him. I know Ally McCoist was keen to get him before he moved on to Sheffield United. Hopefully they can get a deal arranged to take him,” he added.
