Real Madrid midfielder, Isco, is close to signing a contract extension with the European champions, according to reports from Spanish newspaper, AS.

Isco has a contract till June 2018, as a result of which has seen his future has come under intense speculation in recent months.

Last month, The Mirror reported that Tottenham Hotspur were set to firm up their interest for Isco in the summer, with the newspaper suggesting that the Madrid playmaker is ready to quit the Spanish giants.

Isco has often voiced concerns over his lack of playing time at Madrid. The Spaniard said in a recent interview, as quoted by The Mirror, that his future “is at stake” and that he “will make a decision” before the end of the season.

It seems that Isco has indeed taken a decision on his future. AS claims that he will sign a long term contract with Madrid, and that the agreement is “very close” to being done.

The report adds that Isco has been tempted with offers from several clubs, but Madrid was always his first priority.

The news will come as a blow for Spurs who were planning to bolster their attacking department with Isco. His creativity, skill, guile and intelligence would have taken Spurs to a new height.

Signing a player of his calibre would have made a huge statement. Furthermore, Isco’s experience would have come handy in European competitions for Spurs.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs make an offer quickly to persuade Isco into moving to London. They can tempt him with the offer of regular playing time, something he has always struggled to manage at Madrid.
