The goalkeeper has been in great form this season.

Leeds United chairman and owner Massimo Cellino was spotted at the Southend United v Morecambe League Two clash on the final day of the Football League season, rather than going to see his team take on Sheffield Wednesday.

It immediately had whispers doing the rounds that Cellino may have been monitoring Southend goalkeeper David Bentley.

The talented stopper was linked with a move to Leeds by The Mail in January and former boss Brian McDermott was also rumoured to be a big fan of the 21-year-old.

He helped Southend to a League Two play-off final victory against Wycombe Wanderers recently and looks like being one of the more wanted players in the Football League this summer.

But he is set to stay at Southend United.

He told the Southend Echo this week:

“It is my understanding that I will be offered a new contract.

“My agent and I will be sitting down with the club to talk about it all and I’m happy to do that.

“I know there has been a little bit of speculation about my future but I’m very happy with what we’ve achieved this year and I enjoy being a Southend player.”

Leeds recently let Stuart Taylor and Alex Cairns leave Elland Road on free transfers, leaving Marco Silvestri as their only front-line keeper for next season.

But Bentley does not look like making a move to Leeds this summer. Leeds will have to look for a different stopper.
