The Dutchman would be an outstanding addition to the Newcastle United squad.

The Toon Army are surely heading into this season’s Premier League campaign in buoyant mood after last term’s Championship title, Rafa Benitez at the helm, and their club being linked with some top quality players.

One of those players, Bas Dost, has been the subject of a €40 million (£35 million) bid from Newcastle, according to Portuguese media outlet A Bola.

The 28-year-old Sporting Lisbon hitman was in sensational form in the Primeira Liga last season, scoring 34 goals in 31 outings, and his levels of performance certainly did not go unnoticed.

Standing at 6ft 5in, the towering Dutchman possesses all of the attributes needed to be a real success in the Premier Legaue, and if Rafa Benitez does manage to bring him to St James’ Park for the £35 million reported, it would be a signing of real intent, and would highlight the Magpies’ ambition for the season ahead.

The Toon are a huge club, with a highly respected standing within the game, but the manner in which they have conducted themselves in the transfer market in years gone by has not been befitting of a so-called ‘big club’.

With a manager like Benitez at the helm, however, they will surely be able to attract a highly calibre of player in the foreseeable future, and the signing of the Holland international would be a superb place to start.

Some Newcastle fans may be sceptical to the idea of spending £35 million on a 28-year-old who is unproven in the Premier League, but in today’s day and age, that is the kind of price that needs to be paid to secure a top class striker.

Now is the time for the Magpies to flex their financial muscle, and prove that they mean business.
