Blind – This is where I prefer to play

Manchester United star Daley Blind has revealed his preferred playing position.

Manchester United midfielder Daley Blind has revealed he prefers playing in central midfield.

United signed Blind in a big money deal from Ajax at the end of the last transfer window to provide a defensive element in midfield but also to provide cover at left-back.

“The midfield is my slight preference but at left-back I feel fine and have no problem playing there,” he’s quoted by De Telegraaf.

The comments are interesting considering Blind’s perceived strongest position is on the left hand side of defence.

However, evidence from United’s other transfer deals suggests that van Gaal only ever bought Blind to play in a holding midfield role, to be used on the left in the case of injuries and suspensions.

United spent big during the summer to sign Marco Rojo from Sporting Lisbon and Luke Shaw from Southampton; two naturally left sided defenders.

At the moment there’s no reason to move him from the middle of the team.

The stats suggest he’s having an effect in terms of winning tackles and breaking up the flow of the opposition’s play which was always going to be his main job when he came into the team.

It will be interesting to see how he does play if he’s called on to fill in at left-back further into the season.

He obviously has experience there but United appear to be keen for him to consolidate as a holding player, which would make him rusty in the back four.

He prefers central midfield and there’s absolutely no reason for the club to move him from there.
