Newcastle are said to have made Cristiano Ronaldo an offer, and the Portugal international has been criticised by Chris Sutton for his 2022 World Cup antics.

What’s the story?

Well, it was Xavier Jacobelli who told Tutto Mercato Web Radio that the Magpies had made an offer to the 37-year-old, after Manchester United terminated his contract.

If Ronaldo accepts the move, it would not come with the seal of approval from Sutton.

The 49-year-old told the Daily Mail that he thinks Portugal’s No.7 is a cheat after he went down softly to win a penalty against Ghana yesterday, scoring from the spot to become the first male footballer to score at five World Cups.

It turned out to be a crucial strike as Portugal narrowly beat Ghana by a 3-2 scoreline, and Sutton has now laid into Ronaldo for his antics.

He said: “It’s embarrassing, really. I saw the footage and I mean, blimey. It’s ridiculous, it’s cheating, it’s out of order. Come on, that was awful.”

Clearly, Sutton is disgusted with Ronaldo.

Strangely, the VAR officials didn’t even tell Ismail Elfath to go and look at the monitor to double check his decision, which was very strange given the fact it was far from a stonewall penalty.

Newcastle must not sign Ronaldo

In our view, signing Ronaldo would be a surefire way to undo all of Eddie Howe’s good work on Tyneside.

As talented as the six-time Ballon d’Or winner obviously is, he is likely to make everything about himself at Newcastle, and would surely disrupt the harmony amongst the squad.

We would maybe understand if the Magpies were struggling down the bottom of the Premier League, but as they sit pretty in third place, there is simply no need to sign someone like Ronaldo.

Younger players with massive potential, such as Alexander Isak, are the profiles Howe needs at St James’ Park, rather than a high profile figure like Ronaldo.
