Ian Wright has backed Tottenham Hotspur target Lautaro Martinez to win the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup, as he told Wrighty’s House Podcast.

The Premier League legend backed Martinez to ‘blast through’ in the colours of Argentina and outscore Lionel Messi on the world’s biggest stage.

Argentina, who are the current Copa America holders, have Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland in their group ahead of the opening game between hosts Qatar and Ecuador in four days time.

Martinez has been in strong goalscoring form for Inter Milan this season – seven Serie A goals in 15 games – so, he heads to the Middle East in a confident mood.

Given that Wright is backing Argentina to go all the way and win the 2022 World Cup, he thinks Martinez will be the goalscoring star for his country.

“I am going to go (for my Golden Boot), because I have gone with Argentina, so someone is going to have to blast them to it,” said Wright.

“I think Lautaro Martinez. I think he might be the one to finish it off. He might be the one to score the goals. He might be Steve Kerr, so I am going to go with Martinez for the Golden Boot.

“Lionel Messi might score the 1-0 goal. But Martinez is someone who will blast through the group stages and might score in the latter stages. Messi might be the one who scores the winner against Brazil in the semis.”

TOTTENHAM’S INTEREST IN MARTINEZ

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte knows Martinez very well from his days at Inter and it seems as though Spurs are looking to sign him in the summer.

If Argentina go all the way in Qatar, then Spurs wanting to sign Martinez, who is at the peak of his powers at 25, would become even more difficult to capture.

Either way, if Spurs want to meet Conte’s long-term targets, then signing someone like Martinez would certainly make things interesting for him.
