QPR’s Carabao Cup journey is over after manager Steve McClaren made wholesale changes from the side who lost to Norwich City last weekend, with a number of fringe players starting.
Matt Ingram returned in goal with the likes of Niko Hamalainen, Ilias Chair, Osman Kakay and Bright Osayi-Samuel all given a run out, but in the end it was a largely disappointing performance from Rangers.
McClaren would have been hoping for his younger generation to step up at Bloomfield Road, but the former Derby County boss oversaw a lacklustre showing that will leave him with plenty to ponder.
Jordan Cousins was given a red card for two bookings while the likes of Matt Smith, Alex Baptiste and Sean Goss failed to deliver, and QPR fans will want to see a vastly improved display at Swansea City on Saturday.
McClaren must get the Hoops back on track in the league and, after the Blackpool defeat, it shows that plenty of work still needs to be done with a number of the players involved on Tuesday.
Grant Hall is making a return from injury and he will take time to rediscover his form, but some of the others really need to up their game. A call-up to the first-team could await most of them but the Blackpool showing does not breed confidence.
The younger QPR players are still learning their trade, but the other hopefuls must improve to show that they can have a positive impact in McClaren’s starting line-up for the weeks ahead.
