Leeds United loanee Paudie O’Connor seized his chance to make an impact for Blackpool in their Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

The defender scored for the Tangerines in their 2-1 defeat, before his evening was ruined by a straight red card.

O’Connor tackled Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the opposition half and failed to win the ball.

He was immediately dismissed, cancelling out Arsenal’s one man advantage.

Blackpool boss Terry McPhillips told the club website: “I thought the referee did great, and his assistants, but I didn’t think Paudie’s was a straight red. I expected a yellow.”

He went on to praise the team, stating: “To come here, the best team in Europe at the moment with the run that they’re on and scare them, is brilliant.”

O’Connor’s red card was unfortunate, and one of the frustrating elements to it was that it was a tackle he did not need to make.

He will learn from it, and take huge confidence from his appearance, as up until that point he had been solid defensively.

O’Connor has been in and out of the Blackpool side this season. When his suspension is served, he will be bidding to move forward as a regular in the XI and try and kick on back at Leeds United next season.
