Tony Mowbray’s charges fell to a 3-1 loss at Wigan, their second derby loss in the space of a few days, and many Blackburn fans were not at all impressed.
Blackburn Rovers have suffered a second successive derby defeat as Wigan Athletic ran out 3-1 winners in Wednesday night’s Championship clash at the DW Stadium.
Last Saturday, Tony Mowbray’s side fell to a humiliating 4-1 loss at the hands of Preston North End at Deepdale, and many Rovers fans were hoping for an instant response.
It wasn’t to be, however, and a second Lancashire derby in the space of a few days resulted in the Latics condemning Blackburn to another embarrassing defeat.
Gary Roberts, James Vaughan and Callum McManaman got on the scoresheet for the hosts, while Blackburn’s deficit-halving reply on 83 minutes was a Dan Burn own goal.
Despite claiming just 43% of possession, Wigan mustered 17 shots overall, of which nine were on target, compared to six overall and two on target for the visitors, according to Sky Sports.
Mowbray was unimpressed throughout the game and at full time following Blackburn’s poor performance, and did not pull any punches in his post-match interview.
“I’ve told the players in the dressing room that the performance is the worst I’ve seen since I arrived at the club,” he told the official club website.
“I didn’t see it coming and I’m not sure where it came from. It was unacceptable and we have to put things right.”
A fair few Blackburn fans were just as bemused as Mowbray and many post-match Twitter comments did not paint a pleasant picture at Ewood Park:
Blackburn sit 13th in the table – five points off the playoffs – following the defeat at the DW Stadium and will host Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
