Paul Lambert’s Rovers travel to Hillsborough in the Championship on Tuesday.
Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Lambert has admitted via the Sheffield Star that his side were beaten to the signing of Aiden McGeady by Tuesday’s opponents Sheffield Wednesday.
McGeady was courted by both clubs during the winter transfer window – along with Leeds United, according to reports – but the Everton winger opted for a loan move to Hillsborough instead.
It’s been a slow start to McGeady’s Owls career so far, but the fit-again Irishman has been more involved of late and earned an international recall last month.
Lambert played alongside McGeady at Celtic towards the end of his playing career, but history alone wasn’t enough to tempt the 30-year-old to Ewood Park.
Explaining why McGeady ended up in Yorkshire rather than Lancashire, Lambert said, as quoted by the Sheffield Star: “(Money) and where they are in the table.
“I don’t know what the deal between Sheffield Wednesday and Everton was and Aiden himself but he chose them and sometimes you get them and sometimes they slip through your grasp.”
Despite missing out on McGeady, Lambert was still able to add to his midfield, bringing in Sunderland’s Jordi Gomez and Swansea’s Matt Grimes on loan.
Gomez in particular has impressed for Rovers, scoring three goals in 12 appearances, while McGeady has found the net on one of his nine outings, having played just 45 minutes for Everton this season.
