Aston Villa defender Bjorn Engels is enjoying playing alongside Tyrone Mings, Birmingham Live report.

Engels was one of the many new signings made by manager Dean Smith during the summer transfer window, with Mings also making his loan move last term a permanent one.

Although the Villans haven’t had the ideal start to the season, with two losses from two, there have been encouraging signs in their performances that suggest they can compete at top-flight level.

Engels is certainly encouraged and has highlighted his partnership with Mings as a potentially successful one.

As quoted by Birmingham Live, he said: “I feel great next to him. He is a born leader. It is good.

“We talk a lot together, on and off the pitch. We give instructions to each other. He is left-footed, I’m right. I think we complement each other well.”

With so many new players in the team this season, Villa need their players to bond in such a manner and quickly. It must be heartening for supporters then that Engels is bullish about the central defence moving forward.

Villa’s fixtures don’t get any easier over the next few weeks and Everton visit on Friday night in what is sure to be a big test of the credentials of Smith’s side.

The Toffees have kept 10 clean sheets in their last 13 top-flight matches. They certainly aren’t going to go down without a fight as the home side look to pick up their first points of the season.

If Villa can sort out the silly mistakes though, they do have the talent in the team to produce match-winning performances.

This weekend, the foundations for that must be provided by Engels and Mings.
