Make no mistake: Harry Redknapp’s reputation is in tatters. And that much must be taken into consideration in light of recent odds suggesting he could be set to succeed John Carver at Newcastle.
The 67-year-old could not even motivate his QPR side enough to register a single point away from home this Premier League season, made a number of inconsistent excuses and then, by his own admission, left the west London side in a physical state not good enough for Premier League management.
But, at Newcastle, things could be a little different for Redknapp. His biggest career success came at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was taking an underdog side into the top four – successfully.
Newcastle is a lot closer to that kind of scenario than QPR. And, where Redknapp lacks tactical acumen, he plays attacking, expansive football. Who was the last Newcastle boss to do that to any degree of success?

Or would supporters of the Magpies like to see, just for one season, a fun, exciting campaign where an attacking side pushed every opponent and even tried to win a cup?
In the recently-resigned QPR boss, Newcastle could – bizarrely – have the perfect man for that job if they don’t appoint Carver full-time. For every quality that made Redknapp a poor QPR manager would work in his favour when it comes to being the perfect Newcastle coach.
