Quite a few Celtic fans on Twitter are shocked by the club’s latest decision.

The Hoops announced on Saturday that Jonny Hayes and Jozo Simunovic would be leaving the club on free transfers.

Hayes turns 33 in July and therefore there wasn’t a huge amount of surprise that Celtic didn’t give him a one-year extension.

But Simunovic, who joined the Bhoys under Ronny Deila five years ago, was only 25 and carried a valuation of £5 million last summer [Scottish Sun].

On the surface, it would’ve made sense for the Scottish Premiership champions to trigger their one-year extension option, given that he’s by no means a bad centre-back and one who could’ve improved.

Here’s how fans of the Parkhead club reacted to the decision on Twitter:

One possible explanation behind Celtic releasing him could be his injury history.

According to Transfermarkt, Simunovic, who joined from Dinamo Zagreb, has missed over 100 games for the Bhoys through injury and it’s plausible that the club felt that they needed a more reliable defender.
