What does the future hold for Arsenal hitman Eddie Nketiah?
Well, that’s the million dollar question.
Up until a few weeks ago, Nketiah looked absolutely certain to be leaving Arsenal this summer, when his contract expires.
He was behind Alexandre Lacazette in the pecking order and had barely played a minute of Premier League football all season.
However, a surprise double in a 4-2 victory away to Chelsea has given the 22-year-old striker a second wind in North London, and he followed it up with excellent performances in wins against Manchester United and West Ham United.
Arsenal are reportedly set to offer him a new deal to prevent him leaving for free, but is it too little, too late?
According to one journalist, yes.
Charles Watts, who exclusively covers the Gunners for Goal.com, told his YouTube channel that Nketiah – who began his career at London Colney – is set to reject any offer that comes his way from Arsenal and is almost certainly going to be leaving this summer.
He said: “I don’t think they will [convince him to change his mind about going] because he’s rejected plenty of contracts in the last sort of six months to a year, that Arsenal put in front of him.
“So I think him and his agent’s mind seems to be pretty set on leaving, which does feel like a bit of a shame potentially given the way he’s playing at the moment. But he’s put himself in the shop window.”
Is Eddie Nketiah leaving Arsenal?
Unfortunately for Arsenal, it looks increasingly likely.
And you can’t blame Nketiah.
Yes he’s in form at the moment, but where has Arteta been over the past couple of years?
Since returning from a loan at Leeds midway through the 2019-20 campaign, Nketiah has been an Arsenal player and the fact that he’s only started 15 Premier League games since then, in two-and-a-half years, means that the England Under-21 international is probably ready to go elsewhere.
Despite his form, he won’t get regular football under Arteta – who labelled him ‘phenomenal 18 months ago – next season either and therefore, leaving makes complete sense.
