Chelsea’s Kenedy has joined Newcastle United on loan for the rest of the season.
Newcastle United made their first signing of the January transfer window this evening, tying up a loan deal for Chelsea’s Kenedy until the end of the season.
The Magpies lost 3-1 away at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, and that result – coupled with results for their rivals around the relegation zone – means that they now lie just one point clear of the bottom three.
Manager Rafael Benitez has been desperate for reinforcements this month, and with Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover seemingly off, Mike Ashley has now decided to back the Spaniard.
Newcastle finally brought in a new signing this evening, as the club confirmed the arrival of Chelsea youngster Kenedy on loan until the end of the season.
Kenedy, 21, joined Chelsea from Fluminense in his native Brazil back in the summer of 2015, but he has played just 27 first-team games for the Blues.
A loan move to Watford last season saw him play just once, and now Kenedy is heading out again in order to join Newcastle, offering Benitez another option at left back to compete with Paul Dummett.
Previously a winger, Kenedy has adapted his game in recent years, and many Chelsea fans would rather see him stay at the club than see the Blues bring in Roma’s Emerson to replace him as Marcos Alonso’s cover.
Some suggested that they were a ‘bit gutted’ about Kenedy’s exit, stating that Newcastle have brought in an ‘absolute baller’ – and whilst most want to see him thrive and develop under Benitez with regular playing time, others are glad to get him off the books for the next few months after a fairly ineffectual spell at Stamford Bridge.
