Celtic and Neil Lennon have parted ways after a disastrous season

Celtic fans have taken issue with Chris Sutton’s tweet as Neil Lennon leaves their club.
The club confirmed on Wednesday morning that Lennon had resigned, saying: “Celtic Football Club today announced that Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as Football Manager with immediate effect.
“We thank Neil sincerely for all he has done for the club and we wish him every success going forward.”
The move follows a disastrous campaign for the champions, who were widely expected to win a historic tenth successive title.
Instead, they find themselves 18 points behind Rangers, having lost both derbies as well as matches against the likes of Ross County and St Mirren.
The Staggies also knocked Lennon’s side out of the Betfred Cup, one of three tournaments that Celtic have exited this season.

Fans, pundits and former players have long been calling for Lennon to leave, with former Celtic forward Sutton among them.
In the wake of Tuesday night’s reports that the manager had been sacked, Sutton tweeted: “Neil Lennon had to go.
“I know this season has been a disaster but i hope after the anger settles down about this season that people respect that Neil has been a great servant to Celtic both as a player and manager.”
That message hasn’t received universal approval from Celtic supporters, as can be seen from the tweets below.
Speaking on the Record Celtic podcast earlier this month, Sutton said: “For men Neil can’t be in charge. I don’t care whether he wins every game until the end of the season. This season has been a disaster. And I don’t like saying that as a former teammate.
“When you look back to last season, it’s the same core of players, so the simple question is: Why has the level dropped off so much?
“It’s the manager who carries the can and this has gone on for too long.
“Celtic have regressed under Neil this season and that’s why there needs to be a new guy and then the overhaul can begin.”
