Birmingham City bagged their first Championship win since August by beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at St Andrew’s.

Birmingham fans have been reacting on Twitter to Isaac Vassell’s performance in the narrow victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night at St Andrew’s.

The Blues went into their clash with the Owls still looking for their first win since the second weekend of the season, but they would have been slightly buoyed by their draw against Derby at the weekend which saw the end of their six game losing run.

But with the game still goalless heading past the hour-mark, caretaker manager Lee Carsley threw on Vassell, who was still seeking his first goal for the Midlands side following his summer move from Luton Town.

And the change had the desired effect as it was the 24-year-old who broke the deadlock 14 minutes from time, as he got himself on the end of Jacques Maghoma’s brilliant through ball and finished first time from close-range.

The goal gave Birmingham a much-needed win – though it was not enough to lift them out of the Championship’s bottom three, it still takes them to within one point of 17th place Hull City – and would have surely given Vassell a much-needed boost of confidence after four previous substitute appearances for his new side without scoring.

Unsurprisingly, the goal saw Vassell receive a huge amount of praise on social media, with some labelling him a star in the making while others drew parallels between himself and Jamie Vardy with both men coming from the non-league game while the latter has since gone on to become a Premier League winner.

Vassell may be some way off that level right now, but the fans were no doubt delighted with his contribution…
