The former Ipswich Town man has been told he can leave Newcastle, and would be a class signing for Harry Redknapp’s side.

With Birmingham City set for a summer revamp under Harry Redknapp, one player that might be worth the former Tottenham Hotspur manager’s attention is Newcastle United striker Daryl Murphy, who is to be sold by the Magpies this summer, as reported by the Shields Gazette.

The 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international may not have age on his side but has been something of a late bloomer, having found consistent form in front of goal since the 2013/14 season – reaching double figures in three of his last four campaigns.

The one season out of those four where he didn’t reach 10 or more goals was last season at Newcastle, where he was a back-up player but still managed to find the net an impressive six times in 17 games as the Magpies won the title on the final day of the season.

Murphy was brought specifically to Newcastle to ensure promotion by being a valuable asset when called upon, and that’s exactly what he did – and there’s no reason why he can’t have a similar impact elsewhere, and that could be with an ambitious Birmingham.

The Blues do have Lukas Jutkiewicz, Che Adams and Clayton Donaldson in their striking department, but Murphy represents an upgrade on all of those players – despite his age – and could be the man to spearhead Birmingham’s revival after a shocking season.

Redknapp’s side only secured their safety on the final day of the season after a truly appalling run of two wins in 23 league games saw them fall into serious danger, and having a player of Murphy’s quality would definitely prevent that from happening again next season – and could even turn their fortunes around entirely.
