Birmingham City are currently inside the play-off places in the Championship table.
Birmingham manager Gary Rowett
During an interview with the Birmingham Mail, Blues boss Gary Rowett explained the challenges that his side will face when looking to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.
Birmingham have impressed so far this season, and currently sit in fifth position in the Championship table, after losing just two games from their last 13 league outings.
And Rowett discussed his intention to strengthen his options over the January transfer window, whilst urging caution with regards to finding value for money in today’s market, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail:
“We look like we could be in a position where we could at least try to strengthen. The challenge is sometimes you can go and spend £2-3m on a couple of players in the Championship and at the moment that’s standing still. We have got to keep moving forward and keep trying to improve. We know January is going to be a strong position for us in terms of where we have been before. I am not suggesting we are going to be signing players for £15-20m like some teams are able to do but we are going to be in a very strong position for us. So it’s important we keep going until that time.”

With so many teams around them in the table spending huge sums of money, such as Aston Villa and Newcastle United, it could be argued that Birmingham are outperforming their remit so far this season, but their fantastic start to the campaign has brought a weight of expectation along with it, and how they deal with that pressure will be vitally important as to how far they can go this season.
One area where the Blues will surely have to improve upon if they are to stay in the play-off picture is in the goalscoring department, with their 22 goals scored only the 10th highest tally in the division.
Will Rowett be looking for a striker in January?
At least Birmingham are now in a financial position where they can go out and buy someone of the required standard to help them achieve their long-term goals.
