Rangers continue to be linked with a move for Motherwell’s Louis Moult.

According to the Motherwell Times, Birmingham City and Preston North End have joined the race to sign Motherwell goalscorer Louis Moult ahead of the January transfer window.

A 2015 signing from Wrexham, Moult has become a hero at Fir Park, scoring 18 goals in each of his two full seasons with the Steelmen whilst becoming one of the most dangerous strikers in Scotland.

Moult has built on that so far this season, smashing nine goals in just 14 appearances in all competitions this term, with his goalscoring exploits winning him the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership Player of the Month award for September.

The problem for Motherwell is that Moult’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the 25-year-old has yet to commit to a new deal, meaning he could leave for free next summer – or in a cut-price January deal.

Last month, the Motherwell Times reported that Birmingham City and Preston North End are both interested in signing Moult, having sent scouts to watch him in action against Aberdeen – and could mount £650,000 bids for the goal machine in January.

The report notes that Rangers have already failed with a bid worth almost £400,000, but with The Scottish Sun recently claimed that the Gers will attempt a deal in January, but the additional interest from Championship clubs may be a concern for Pedro Caixinha.

The Gers have seen Alfredo Morelos impress since signing from HJK Helsinki, but with Eduardo Herrera yet to get going and question marks over Kenny Miller’s future, Moult may be needed at Ibrox.

It’s understandable that Preston want a striker though; summer signing Sean Maguire has mostly played out wide under Alex Neil, whilst with Jordan Hugill possibly a wanted man in January, the Lilywhites are taking a smart move by lining up potential striker targets.

Rangers now have to battle Preston in the race for Moult, and Caixinha may be hoping that he will choose staying in Scotland, where he has impressed so much, over making a return to England.
