Billy Whitehouse’s short-term Leeds deal looks smart considering his lack of impact

The Leeds United player has barely featured and looked woefully off the pace when he did.

Leeds United signed Billy Whitehouse from Doncaster Rovers in August 2016, but despite the player featuring 11 times for his former club he has struggled to make any significant impact at Elland Road.

In fact, the midfielder’s only appearance to date came in the shock FA Cup defeat to Sutton United, when Whitehouse and some of Leeds’ other fringe players were roundly criticised for their below-par performance.

Since then he has slipped out of the reckoning once more, consigned to Leeds’ under-23 side and looking every inch like a player destined for a swift exit.

Leeds joint-owner Massimo Cellino has a habit of giving player’s short-term contracts and while that can sometimes come back to bite the club, in the case of Whitehouse it seems to have been the right call.

The Whites were able to see what the player could do without committing long-term to his development and on the evidence of the Sutton match, Whitehouse is simply not up to it.

He may come good, but when you consider Leeds are only going to strengthen in the years ahead – and may even be back among England’s elite as early as May – the prospect of Whitehouse being anything other than a cautionary tale seems highly unlikely.
