The Sunderland defender is not exactly a fan favourite at the club after some poor showings last season.
Sunderland manager David Moyes has a lot to think about between now and January, when he will have another chance to strengthen his squad in the fight against relegation.
But as well as some new additions, the next transfer window is also likely to see some players depart the Stadium of Light, with right-back Billy Jones potentially among them.
The 29-year-old is at the stage of his career when he will want to play week in, week out, and that is unlikely to happen at Sunderland any time soon; in fact, the only scenario that could see Jones feature regularly could be if they play next season in the Championship, and that is something no one involved with the club wants.
Jones was side-lined through injury at the start of the campaign and since recovering he has been overlooked for the matches against Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion.
He has featured for 62 minutes against Manchester City’s under-23 side while he started in the Checkatrade Trophy victory against Hartlepool United on Tuesday evening.
Now back to full fitness, Jones will be hoping to force his way into Moyes’ plans at Sunderland, but considering some of his performances for the club last season that seems unlikely.
Sunderland’s current first choice right-back Javier Manquilo may only be on loan but Jones has looked out of sorts for quite some time and a step down to the Championship may make sense at this stage of his career.
