Billy Horschel has thrown his support behind The Players Championship and weighed in on whether figures like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm should be invited to TPC Sawgrass.

It’s been a talking point all week, with opinions split on where it stands among the sport’s biggest events.

The PGA Tour leaned into the debate, releasing a trailer for next month’s tournament with the tagline ‘March is going to be major.’ That was followed by Brandel Chamblee’s claim that The Players is the most important of all majors.

A lot of people pushed back on that view, including Phil Mickelson. But there’s no doubt Billy Horschel holds The Players in very high regard.

Horschel is one of the top players from this era still chasing a major win. Despite that, his record at TPC Sawgrass isn’t exactly stellar.

Even so, during a chat with Trey Wingo, Horschel made it clear that winning The Players would be tough to top.

He also believes LIV Golf’s biggest names should have a place in the event.

“I’m going to say something, people are going to be on either side of it. There’s one thing I haven’t done, I haven’t won a major in my career. And I do believe I’m going to achieve that. I have said for me personally if I win a Players Championship, I will consider that a major,” he said.

“That’s my take. That doesn’t even have to be everyone else’s take. People are going to chastise me for that comment, and some people may agree with me on that comment. But I think that event in the sense of everything around it, the greatness of it, the field – now, the field, I will say I do believe the PGA Tour should invite the likes of Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, Bryson DeChambeau. I do believe that needs to be fixed in my opinion.

“I’ve always considered it a fifth major. Listen, I’m biased; I live there.  I’ve lived there since I got out of college.”

LIV Golf stars were nearly invited to TPC Sawgrass

LIV players aren’t expected at The Players next month. Cameron Smith was among those who turned down an invitation back through the PGA Tour’s Returning Member Program.

The landscape looked very different this time last year though. It seemed likely then that LIV players would take part in The Players field at TPC Sawgrass.
