Speaking to BBC Sport, former Rangers striker Billy Dodds has criticised Scott Arfield for his red card on Sunday.

Rangers beat Hearts 2-1 at Tynecastle, but the Gers’ midfielder was issued a second-half red card.

Arfield slid into the hosts’ goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal, who had held a Rangers shot on the line, and the former Burnley ace was promptly dismissed.

Steven Gerrard’s side had a nervy last 20 minutes to contend with, but the Ibrox side successfully protected their narrow advantage to move top of the Premiership.

But the club’s former marksman Dodds is puzzled over Arfield’s tackle in the first place.

“What is he doing? Seriously you’ve got to say that right away. Zlamal does well, he gets back makes the save. His two hands are on it – you just leave it,” he told BBC Sport.

“Sometimes you want to try to bundle it if he’s scrambling but Arfield goes in and bundles it. Talk about letting someone back into the game.”

It certainly did constitute dangerous play by the 29-year-old, who was rightly dismissed.

Rangers have now picked up over six red cards this season, which was their total for the entirety of last term under Pedro Caixinha and later Graeme Murty.

The discipline is starting to become a big problem and one that manager Gerrard must rectify.

He insisted at full time that the Blues ‘aren’t a dirty team’, but their discipline this season indicates that they might be and it’s only a matter of time before it hurts Rangers.
