Victor Wembanyama’s first playoff run underlined how quickly his NBA ceiling has shifted from promise to reality.
The San Antonio Spurs star had a remarkable season, becoming the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in league history, reaching the NBA Finals on his playoff debut and entering the MVP conversation.
Yet that résumé could not shield him after San Antonio lost the Finals 4-1 to the New York Knicks, with one Bill Simmons listener finding a brutal way to frame the end of his season.
Bill Simmons fan gives Victor Wembanyama a brutal new nickname

The joke came during the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, where Simmons read out a message from listener Todd Wilmack after the Spurs’ defeat.
Wilmack wrote: “He’s French, he’s cheesy, and he melted down. Wemby’s nickname should be ‘fondue’.”
It landed because Wembanyama’s nickname situation remains simple. Most fans call him Wemby, while there has been a push to make ‘The Alien’ a broader brand.
That name has traction around Spurs circles, but it has not yet become the default across the league. After the Finals, ’fondue’ gave rivals a sharper punchline.
Victor Wembanyama’s Game 5 reaction only added to the taunts
The nickname also stuck because Wembanyama’s behavior after Game 5 made the defeat feel more dramatic.
He struggled to process the loss, then drew criticism for saying the Spurs dominated the series for most of the time in his press conference.
The Spurs were also criticised by Draymond Green after the series ended, with Green taking issue with the team not shaking hands with the Knicks.
None of it changes Wembanyama’s status as one of basketball’s defining players, but it showed how quickly Finals scrutiny turns. Even a historic season can end with a joke fans refuse to let go.
