Cast your mind back to this summer and you’ll remember that Everton had a big task on their hands in terms of getting a new manager through the door.
The Toffees were linked with a plethora of gaffers, and in the end they settled on Rafa Benitez.
It’s no secret that Benitez isn’t the most popular man at Goodison Park, but things could be so much worse right now.
Say what you will about the Spaniard, but he’s doing a decent job given the circumstances.
Yes, Everton are in poor form right now, but they’re only three points off the top six and they’re without two of their best players – Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Richarlison has only just returned from injury.
Benitez isn’t doing the best job in the world. After all, the Toffees have lost three games on the spin, but we have to imagine that he’s doing better than Nuno Espirito Santo would have.
According to the Transfer Window Podcast’s Duncan Castles, Bill Kenwright was the one who pushed for Benitez to be appointed ahead of Nuno, and it seems as though he did Everton something of a favour.
“You have noises of Rafa Benitez being a strong candidate for the job again. My understanding is that Bill Kenwright has been pushing for Benitez after David Moyes signed a new contract at West Ham United, and I don’t think Everton fans will be impressed by that move if it transpires,” Castles said.
“You have Nuno who wants to become the Everton manager, he wants to do it, but he doesn’t have the contract offer from Everton in order to commit, and he’s now wondering if it’s actually going to come, despite Everton briefing to the media that he’s first-choice.”

Nuno ended up getting the Spurs job, but he’s been sacked already, and it seems as though Everton have had a lucky escape here.
Yes, Spurs are above Everton in the league, but they have a stronger squad and fewer injury issues, and, in our view, if Nuno was appointed at Goodison instead of Benitez, the Toffees could have been in serious trouble.
Everton fans may not thank Kenwright for pushing for Benitez, but he’s seemingly done the Merseyside club a favour by pushing them away from the idea of bringing Nuno in.
