Bilic’s response when asked if he has been let down by West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic

The West Ham United forward has struggled since joining the club in the summer.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic spoke to reporters during his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s clash with Spurs in the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium tomorrow night, and responded to a question asking if he felt let down by summer signing Marko Arnautovic, as quoted by the club’s official website.

The Croatian brought the 28-year-old to the London Stadium from Stoke City in July, for a fee believed to be in the region of £24 million, but he has failed to impress thus far, and is still yet to chalk up either a goal or an assist in seven outings for West Ham.

The Austrian has been particularly poor of late, playing a peripheral role in the east London outfit’s games, and many Hammers fans are already questioning the wisdom behind bringing him to the club in the summer.

And Bilic responded to reporters when asked if he felt let down by Arnautovic following his abject displays in the claret and blue shirt so far, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“If someone is letting you down, it’s when someone is doing it deliberately. I spoke to Marko a few times and he wants and he tries, but at the moment, not only for him, but we are all in the same boat, we all have to do better. His first spell here was disrupted by the red card and international break, but I’m very positive that West Ham fans are going to be delighted with him, because he has that quality. We all have to help him and I talked with him about it on Monday.”

Bilic takes his team to north London tomorrow night to take on bitter rivals Tottenham, and there couldn’t be a better stage for Arnautovic to prove his doubters wrong.

Whether he will be selected to play or not, however, remains to be seen.
