Tottenham Hotspur’s loss to West Ham looks even worse now Slaven Bilic has been fired.
Two weeks ago Tottenham Hotspur blew one of their easiest paths to silverware by collapsing at home to West Ham in the Carabao Cup.
Spurs played a weakened team and after going 2-0 up got complacent, and were undone by a second half blitz from the Hammers who stunned Wembley to win 3-2.
The victory saved Slaven Bilic’s job as West Ham boss… but only temporarily.
Yesterday he was fired by the Hammers board after following up the win over Spurs by taking just one point from the following two Premier League games.
It would almost have been better for Spurs if West Ham had actually won the next two, and it seemed as though their loss was part of a greater West Ham ‘re-awakening’ they could do little about.
Instead their subsequent form and Bilic’s sacking shows the Wembley win was a total aberration, a fluke win which ended Tottenham’s hopes of winning the competition.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino may not be a fan of the Carabao Cup, but this stance has seen him come in for criticism considering that for all the plaudits he has attained, he has not won a single trophy in English football.
Now in his fourth year at Spurs, pressure is building on him to redress this, and the Premier League and Champions League are long shots, although not impossible.
The Carabao Cup was one of the easier trophies to win, and Tottenham’s loss to West Ham looks even more unforgivable now that it did immediately after the defeat.
