Alex McLeish is far from popular at Villa Park- fans are already dreaming of a fresh start…
When the Mail reported in midweek that Dave Whelan had agreed to part ways with Wigan boss Roberto Martinez this summer, we asked if Aston Villa could reignite their interest in the Spaniard.
Buoyed by their midweek win over Manchester United, Whelan poured scorn on the rumours, declaring there was no such agreement.
Which is all a bit of a blow to Villa fans, who were very enthusiastic about the possibility of Martinez taking over.
Villa fans are tired of McLeish’s dour brand of football which sees them stuck in 15th place, and had just 30,000 attend their last home game against Stoke.
In a poll on our website we asked who fans would like to see in charge next season; McLeish, Martinez, or ‘other.’
The response was overwhelming- 78 per cent of fans voted for Martinez, 6 per cent for McLeish, and 16 per cent for ‘other’.
Who are those ‘other’ men fans want to see?
There is quite a list, from the over-ambitious – Jose Mourinho – to the ridiculous – Ron Atkinson.
Here are the other names suggested:
Brendan Rodgers, Slaven Bilic, Mick McCarthy, Claudio Ranieri, Ian Holloway, Andre Villas-Boas, Paul Lambert, Gus Poyet, David Moyes, Alan Curbishley.
Any of those take your fancy?
Which ones are realistic?
Holloway sounds like a decent option to us, we are not convinced on Curbishley, while the others may be difficult to convince, but that’s not to say they aren’t worth going after.
You never know, Roberto Martinez might turn out to be the man when all is said and done.
Of the 460 responses to our poll, just 30 fans said they want to see McLeish back in charge.
