Speaking on the All Together Now Podcast, Jamie Carragher has given his view on the idea that Everton boss Rafa Benitez isn’t good enough to manage the Toffees.
Many Everton fans don’t want the Spaniard at their club due to his Liverpool links, but there has also been the argument that he’s past his prime.
Some Everton fans argue that Benitez hasn’t done anything in football over the past decade, and therefore shouldn’t be their manager, but Carragher has defended his former boss.
What’s been said?
The podcast’s host began to make the argument that Benitez isn’t good enough for Everton due to his last 10 years of work, and Carragher wasn’t having it.
“Behave, go on, get to this, because this is the biggest load of nonsense I’ve heard in my life. Before you go any further who are Everton going to get who is at the top of football as a manager?” Carragher asked.
“He was at Napoli, and this is not me just defending Rafa Benitez my old manager, I just don’t like it when people disrespect managers. When you talk about Benitez, do you want him to win trophies at Newcastle, they haven’t done that since 1960. He was at Napoli, where Juventus were absolutely dominating everything, and he beat them in a cup final. He went to Chelsea and he was only there in 6 months, and he won the Europa League.
“I’m not sure what you want him to do. You say he’s not at the top level where he was before competing for the Champions League or whatever, but if he was he wouldn’t go to Everton, so I don’t understand the argument from yourself or from other Blues you’ve spoken to.”

True
As much as Evertonians may not like to hear it, Carragher is absolutely right here.
The reality is that Everton are a mid-table Premier League club and they have been for over 30 years at this point.
They’re not going to attract the best managers in football. Carlo Ancelotti joined when his stock was at the lowest it’s ever been, and Benitez is in a similar boat.
Let’s not forget that the last manager they hired before Ancelotti had recently been sacked by Watford and the one before that was Sam Allardyce.
Benitez is more than good enough to manage Everton.
