Brazil urges Magpies to appoint manager from club ‘bigger than Newcastle’ & forget Rodgers

Alan Brazil has urged Newcastle to appoint Rangers boss Steven Gerrard instead of Brendan Rodgers, as he told talkSPORT (13/10/21 at 7:45 am).

The former striker thinks, even though Rangers are a ‘bigger club than Newcastle’, a move to St James’ Park would be a ‘stepping stone’ for the Englishman.

Even though Steve Bruce is still donning the colours of Newcastle, it seems as though it won’t be long before he is sacked by the club.

If he does indeed go then it will be interesting to see who the Magpies push for, with many out-of-work and in-work managers being linked.

Along with Gerrard, 41, another name that has been touted has been that of Rodgers (Sky Sports), who also managed in Scotland with Celtic.

Celtic-mad Brazil feels, instead of going for the Northern Irishman, Newcastle should push for Gerrard instead, but ex-Arsenal man, Ray Parlour was having none of it.

“I can’t see him leaving, I think he’s going to be at Rangers for a couple of years,” said Parlour. “I think he still has a lot to prove up in Scotland.”

Brazil added: “It would be a good appointment (Rodgers). But I would feel very sorry for Leicester if he was to leave. I think Steven Gerrard.”

Parlour added: “Oh, Al, not again. He’s trying to get rid of Steven Gerrard.”

Brazil then reponded; “No, I am not. From Steven’s point of view, forget Celtic-Rangers situation. I think for Steven to take a big club and I mean a big, big club.

“Rangers are a big club worldwide and probably bigger than Newcastle worldwide. But Newcastle, with its own right, success, is massive. To manage in the Premier League, against the big boys, would be a great stepping stone for Steven Gerrard.”

It does seem inevitable that Gerrard will one day make his way back to England and manage in the Premier League.

At this moment in time, he is proving his worth at Ibrox, after helping the club to their first Premiership title in a decade.

That title win ended Celtic’s chances of winning ten-in-row and pushed Gerrard’s name into legendary status at the club.

But it would be difficult to see someone of Gerrard’s nature walking away from the Gers midway through the season, but going for him in the summer is another thing altogether.
