Leeds United confirmed the hire of Marcelo Bielsa yesterday and what comes next will be truly fascinating.
And while Bielsa’s appointment is good news and there will be exciting signings coming in, fans should expect some shocks too in the outgoing column.
Not only will Leeds have to balance the books financially, Bielsa’s approach is demanding and he will axe players who he does not feel can adapt.
That means what has gone on before may count for little with regards to reputation or perceived qualty.
Bielsa will arrive with his own set of ideas, some which may be pre-determined from video watching, and it must be remembered that he looks for different things than the typical fan or analyst, so will be judging from a new perspective.
This means that senior players could find themselves ostracised from Bielsa’s plans and sold if they are not what he wants.
He did the same at Lille last season, with record setting goalkeeper Victor Enyeama consigned to the reserves, and Tunisian international attacker Naim Sliti sent to Dijon.
Some of the decisions Bielsa will make, and players he decides to sell, may leave Leeds fans scratching their heads.
But supporters have to trust his process and appreciate that he has a plan, and one or two high profile sacrifices are likely to be for the greater good.
