Clinton Morrison has stated that it’s a ‘big statement’ to suggest that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is ‘better’ than Manchester City playmaker, Kevin de Bruyne.

That statement came from Anfield legend Robbie Fowler, who thinks Alexander-Arnold should be starting England’s World Cup opener against Iran given the skills he has in his locker, as he compared him to de Bruyne and David Beckham.

Perhaps one of the best passing fullbacks in the game, the Liverpool academy star is like a playmaker out wide.

For years and years now, the 24-year-old has got assists in his sleep, which have led to his boyhood club winning the Premier League title and securing Champions League glory out in Madrid.

But when Fowler proceeded to state that Alexander-Arnold is ‘better’ than Belgium’s midfield star, former Crystal Palace striker Morrison had to disagree, as he told Sky Sports News.

“I rate Robbie Fowler immensely as a footballer,” said Morrison. “I am not sure that. Trent’s a fantastic player and he has got a delivery like David Beckham.

“But it’s a big statement to be fair. Better than Kevin de Bruyne? Nah, Trent’s not better than Kevin de Bruyne. He is the best midfielder there is in world football. Trent is an outstanding player.”

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD AND SOUTHGATE DON’T MIX

Whilst fans have seen Alexander-Arnold sing and dance with the ball on the domestic stage, those performances haven’t shown themselves when he is donning England colours.

A lot of it is down to how he is used by Southgate, and given that he is a defensive-minded coach, it’s not mixed.

Perhaps when Southgate leaves the England’s manager job, and it probably wouldn’t be a surprise if it happens after the World Cup, then perhaps the next man will be able to get the best out of Alexander-Arnold.
