Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Chelsea loanee and rumoured Newcastle target Conor Gallagher is currently the ‘best young player’ in England after a string of strong performances for Crystal Palace, as he told his own YouTube channel.
Over the weekend, Gallagher scored and assisted during Palace’s 2-0 win at Manchester City – a performance that would have, no doubt, pleased those at Chelsea.
The 21-year-old has been flying like an Eagle in Palace colours this season and it will be interesting how far he can push his game under Patrick Vieira.
His performances haven’t gone unnoticed because the now heavy pockets of Newcastle want to sign the attack-minded midfielder, according to the Daily Mail.
This could be music to the ears of those at Stamford Bridge because they can, of course, keep Gallagher next season or simply allow a bidding war to commence and watch the pounds roll in.
One man that is particularly impressed by Gallagher is former Premier League title-winner Ferdinand, who made sure to big up the all-action midfielder.
“Big shout out to Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher,” said Ferdinand. “Best young player in England, at the minute, Conor Gallagher is in the conversation.
“His output, goals, energy and assists. Effecting games. He has just been tremendous.
“I think Vieira, a big move taking him. I think Vieira’s done a remarkable job.”
The likes of Phil Foden and Emile Smith Rowe have also started the season in a strong fashion and they will probably want to put their name above Gallagher’s.
But, one thing is for sure, the road the Palace man is going down, it wouldn’t be a surprise if England calls are made sooner rather than later.
Gareth Southgate will name his England squad on Thursday for the forthcoming international matches and Gallagher will be in with a shout.
Perhaps the high volume of attacking players ahead of him means that he misses out, but he, at least, deserves a mention.
