Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has warned Guglielmo Vicario he has big shoes to fill after replacing Hugo Lloris.

While Robinson has been impressed with what he has seen from Guglielmo Vicario in a Tottenham shirt so far, he does not think succeeding Hugo Lloris is an easy job.

What has Paul Robinson said about Guglielmo Vicario?

Speaking on Sky Sports News (05/09/2023 at 10:26am), the retired England international said: “I’ve been impressed with him. He’s 26, so he’s coming into his prime.

“He’s got big shoes to follow with Hugo. Hugo’s been there for a long, long time. He’s been a great servant for the club.”

Tottenham signed Vicario from Empoli back in June after Lloris made it clear that he wanted a new challenge.

“I have desires for other things,” the 36-year-old told French outlet Nice-Matin. However, he has not departed the north London club yet and his options are limited with most of the transfer windows in Europe now closed.

Guglielmo Vicario has impressed at Tottenham

It remains to be seen if Vicario can follow in Lloris’ footsteps and become a great Tottenham goalkeeper, but he’s looked fairly solid in goal for Ange Postecoglou’s side so far.

In the Premier League, the Italian currently has a save percentage of 84.2%, which is the third highest among his rivals (FBref).

In the four top-flight games Vicario has played, he has also managed to keep two clean sheets, which is not bad.

The former Empoli man would have liked to have conceded less goals against Brentford and Burnley, who both managed to score twice versus Tottenham.

Still, Vicario can be pleased with the start he has made in north London and will be looking to kick on after the international break.

His side take on Sheffield United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next and will be hoping to overtake Manchester City in first.
