Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta spoke to Football London about West Ham United’s Jack Wilshere.

The Spaniard knows the Hammers midfielder very well thanks to their time together at the Emirates. Wilshere was tipped by many to be the future of Arsenal, but injuries have hampered his progress over the years.

The Englishman left the Gunners for West Ham on a free transfer in the summer of 2018. Sadly, his injury woes have continued at the London Stadium.

Since joining the Irons two years ago, Wilshere has played just 18 games in all competitions. He last started a game for the Hammers in September last year and Arteta has sympathised with his struggles.

He said: “Sad. Big shame. Jack, as a person, such a special character. With the talent, he could have achieved much more but injuries have been tough on him. He’s shown he always finds himself in a position to get back. We wish him the best. I hope he can maintain mentally, that strength to be as good as he can because he deserves that.” (Football London, 13:06)

Arteta’s Arsenal face Wilshere’s West Ham at the Emirates on Saturday. It is unclear if the Englishman will be fit enough to play against his former club, but Moyes confirmed today that his injury isn’t a bad one (Football London, 13:42).

TalkSport revealed earlier this month that West Ham are in talks with Wilshere to terminate his contract. The Englishman’s injuries make him an unreliable player for the Hammers to depend upon, which is the reason why they would like to part ways.

Correire dello Sport reported recently that Serie A side Genoa are interested in the midfielder if he is available for free. That could be a very interesting option for Wilshere if the Hammers force him out.

A move away to a different and less physical league could well help him overcome his injury woes; something that Wilshere, Arteta and almost every football fan would like to see.
