Big Sam: Green didn’t want to leave West Ham for QPR

The West Ham boss says the Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper didn’t want to leave Upton Park.

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce says Rob Green only left the club for financial reasons – and wanted to stay in east London, according to the Daily Mirror.

Green enjoyed promotion from the Championship with the Hammers but left the club for QPR.

Allardyce, however, insists the goalkeeper wanted to stay at West Ham but was offered a superior financial package by the R’s.

Big Sam told reporters: “Financially, we couldn’t get there – that was the key element.

“It wasn’t that Robert didn’t want to stay – he did. But we couldn’t match, at that time, coming back into the Premier League, his financial demands and obviously QPR did.”

As Opta stats show, Green has absolutely thrived since joining QPR, with the pressure he has faced at Loftus Road bringing the most saves out of him of any Premier League goalkeeper.

Intriguingly, though, Allardyce’s man between the sticks at West Ham – Adrian – is just seven saves behind.

An area Green may want to address this weekend, however, is his kicking. Boss Chris Ramsey defended him after the 1-0 loss to Chelsea but, in truth, the QPR shot stopper was guilty of several poor kicks throughout the 90 minutes.

West Ham will face the R’s at Loftus Road at 3pm later today, when the home side will be looking to recreate the kind of atmosphere that earned them points earlier this season.
