Chris Sutton has warned Everton that they shouldn’t appoint Wayne Rooney as their next manager because it’s a ‘big risk’, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Everton sacked Rafa Benitez on Sunday after their 2-1 defeat to Norwich City and they are now on the lookout for a new face.

Whether the Toffees dip into the territory of appointing someone part-time or bringing in a permanent manager straight away, it’s another big call that awaits those in the boardroom.

The individuals that made the call to bring Benitez to the club were warned and now it has turned out to be one of the club’s worst appointments.

This next one has to be right, else Everton are going to continue stagnating and heading towards one part of the table and one part of the table only.

Rooney is a name that is being thrown about, but Sutton made it clear that they shouldn’t head in that direction.

“I think it’s a big risk,” said Sutton. “I would say there are more candidates more suited to the job than Wayne Rooney.

“I would say no to Wayne Rooney.”

From appointing a manager that is a legend across Merseyside, Everton need to now bring in someone that understands the club.

Rooney ticks all those boxes, he’s a fresh face in management, hungry to reach the top and he understands the fans and the club inside out.

But the problem the Toffees might face with the former striker is his lack of experience being thrown into the deep end.

And the fact that he isn’t the type of character to leave a financially-battered and points-deducted Derby side midway through the season.
