Stevie Nicol has changed his mind about Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool securing the transfer of midfielder Romeo Lavia because he isn’t ready for the here and now.
After the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, the Reds are now looking for replacements, even though Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai joined before the Saudi-based players could leave.
Only a week ago, Liverpool legend Nicol was excited by the prospect of Romeo Lavia joining, but that’s when there was a possible chance Fabinho could stay.
Even though Nicol admitted that the Southampton teenager has ‘everything’ to his game, he is now worried about his lack of experience and stated that it’s a ‘big problem’, as he told ESPN.
Perhaps Lavia won’t be the only player Jurgen Klopp brings in? On one hand, he could bring in the teenager, then go for somebody on the other side of the scale.
But, as of this moment, they are only pushing for the former Manchester City midfielder and it isn’t sitting well with Nicol because of the whole Henderson and Fabinho have left.
“Again, this is a potential player we are talking about,” said Nicol. “If Liverpool want to be pushing anybody for the Premier League title, the Champions League or any of the big prizes.
“They need somebody who is going to be playing now and who is going to do the job. They can’t wait on a Lavia getting better or hoping that Curtis Jones can fill in. That doesn’t get you Premier League or Champions League titles.
“So, it’s a big problem right now.”
Liverpool should still push for Lavia
A player of his quality would thrive in the Liverpool environment and under the stewardship of Klopp.
Yes, he might not be ready-made, but why not bring him on board and then also sign that ready-made player?
Liverpool’s issue is the possible £50 million fee they have to pay for Lavia and how that ready-made player might end up costing double.
