According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up Diego Simeone as a potential replacement for Antonio Conte.

According to this report, the Italian is planning his exit from Spurs as his contract enters its final six months and Juventus continue to circle, but luckily, Tottenham seem to have a contingency plan.

Indeed, the north London club are reportedly keen to appoint Atletico Madrid’s Simeone – a manager who himself is under pressure after failing to qualify from the Champions League group stages with Atletico.

Interestingly, Diego Simeone is a manager who is heavily admired by former Spurs favourite, Mauricio Pochettino.

Poch has previously labelled Simeone as one of the best managers in the world, stating that he used him as an example when he was at Spurs.

Pochettino’s Simeone praise

The former Spurs boss was compared to Simeone in 2016, and he was more than happy to take that comparison.

“This is big praise because I consider him one of the best managers in the world. He deserves all the credit,” Pochettino said.

“For me Diego is one of the best. To compete against Real Madrid and Barcelona with a different budget is difficult. It’s difficult to compare because we are in a different league but I think he is a good example.”

One of the best

To say that Simeone is one of the best managers in the world isn’t wide of the mark at all.

The Argentine has worked wonders with Atletico Madrid over the past decade or so. Winning two La Liga titles and taking them within a whisker of two Champions League triumphs as well.

This is a manager who knows how to win with limited resources, and, to be honest, it sounds like he would be a perfect fit for Spurs.

Tottenham could do a lot worse than appointing Simeone in place of Conte.
