The visiting team could have earned a point from the Yorkshire derby had Jordan Rhodes been able to successfully convert his penalty.
Former Wednesday manager Brian Laws was following the match for BBC Sport, and he gave his opinion on the performance of Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
“It’s a big blow for Wednesday – there was nothing between the two sides,” Laws told BBC Sport. “It was one mistake that has ended up being very costly.
“You look at fractions – that mistake from Sasso will prove a very costly one. You can’t leave the ball to a man in as rich form as Wood is. “
“It was important for them to demonstrate they weren’t going to settle for that kind of performance,” added Laws. “They got the penalty, but they wasted their best opportunity.
“Wednesday asked more questions of Leeds than the other way round. Westwood had no saves to make. You won’t get ten, eleven clear chances. You might get one or two. And they have to count.
“Leeds will think that was a lucky three points. Wednesday will think that was a very unlucky loss.”
Over the course of the 90 minutes at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, hosts Leeds had 48% of the possession, took six shots of which one was on target, and earned two corners, according to BBC Sport.
Visitors Wednesday had 52% of the possession, took 10 shots of which one was on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.
